Caution
Improperly turning your meter on or off can damage the meter and valve. If you damage them, you will be responsible for the cost to replace which can run into the hundreds of dollars. If you have a leak or need to make a repair, we will turn your meter off for you at no charge. For other reasons, there is a $21 premises visit charge for next business day service (or $42 for sooner if we have someone available).
Before turning your water on or off, contact us for the last four digits of your meter number that is on the top of the plastic cover which is normally light gray, brown, blue or black. Then:
- Make sure all of your water faucets and hose bibs are turned off.
- Find your meter.
- It will be located in a black plastic box. Most are rectangular but some are round.
- Most meters are grouped two per box and located in the rear corner of the lot, but some are in the front corner. A few are grouped together away from the lot corner.
- Meters in West Wind Oaks are in the front corner and there is only one meter per box.
- You may need to dig out sand from around the meter and/or close the plastic cover to read the number.
If you don’t have a water meter key, you will need a wrench and a bar or screwdriver as shown below. Do not use pliers.
Most valves require a 1/4 turn but a few require more. If the meter is off, the locking rings will be lined up.
Turn counter-clockwise to turn on and clockwise to turn off. Caution: Do not turn this valve with excessive force. This could damage the valve resulting in replacement charges to you. Contact us for further instructions.
Below is a quarter turn valve. Turn the valve such that the top is in line with the meter and service line for ‘ON’. For ‘OFF’, turn the valve across the service line (with the locking ears aligned).
Some homes also have a valve on the outside of the home that may need to be turned on. They are normally under a hose bib.
