Caution
Improperly turning your meter on or off can damage the meter and valve. If you damage them, you will be responsible for the cost to replace which can run into the hundreds of dollars. If you have a leak or need to make a repair, we will turn your meter off for you at no charge. For other reasons, there is a $21 premises visit charge for next business day service (or $42 for sooner if we have someone available).
We will normally check for a leak at no charge, but reserve the right to charge for additional checks when we consider the check to be unwarranted or a previous leak has not been repaired. You may also wish to check for a leak yourself.
Before checking for a leak, you may need to:
- Contact us for the last four digits of your meter number that is on the top of the plastic cover which is normally brown, blue or black.
- Find your meter.
- It will be located in a black plastic box. Most are rectangular but some are round.
- Most meters are grouped two per box and located in the rear corner of the lot, but some are in the front corner. A few are grouped together away from the lot corner.
- Meters in West Wind Oaks are in the front corner and there is only one meter per box.
- You may need to dig out sand from around the meter and/or close the plastic cover to read the number.
Next, make sure all of your water faucets and hose bibs are turned off and the cut-off valve is open. Then find the triangular leak indicator as shown below. If the triangle is turning, you have a leak on your side of the meter even if you can’t see the needle turning.
If the triangle is not turning, you may still have an intermittent leak which can be caused by things such as:
- a toilet that doesn’t always turn off
- an irrigation valve that doesn’t close all the way
If the soil in the meter box is abnormally wet and the triangle is not turning, there may be a leak on the utility side of the meter. Please contact us to inspect.
